The First Draft: How Reactions Reveal Our Inner State
Every emotional moment starts with what I call a “first draft” — that initial reaction you have to a situation. Maybe it’s anger, overwhelm, defensiveness, or withdrawal.
Your reaction isn’t wrong — it’s informative.
Like the rough cut of a film, it shows you something raw and real. But it’s not the final version.
Instead of judging that reaction, take a moment to notice it. What emotion came first? Where did it show up in your body?
From there, you begin the process of emotional regulation — the gentle management of your emotional state, not by controlling it, but by becoming curious and spacious around it.
